Driver Threatens Tree Surgeons

An angry driver threatened to beat up tree surgeons as they removed two huge beech trees blocking a Westerham road last week.

Westerham Hill was closed for almost four days after strong winds brought two huge parts of a decaying beech tree down last Tuesday, before another beech was left hanging precariously over the road.

Down To Earth Trees, based in Shoreham, was commissioned to carry out the huge project – the biggest in its 34 year history – by the owner of the cottage in which the trees stood.

But despite working round the clock for three days to make sure the trees could be moved, operations director Jerry Edwards said the public “made things more difficult”.

He said: “I felt the public lacked understanding because we inconvenienced them. I was very disappointed.

“One car smashed through the signs and went down and threatened my staff to say if they didn't move the blockage, they would beat him up.

“There was a tree hanging over the road and if it had landed on someone, it would have killed them.”

The firm hired a 120-tonne crane to carry out the operation but had to spend Thursday trimming back branches so the huge machinery could be put in place.

When it arrived on Friday, eight crew members worked for 12 hours – from 8am to 8pm – to lift the overhanging beech tree out of the way.

The trees had also destroyed power lines, which meant UK Power Networks also responded to the fallen trees on Tuesday and had to remain onsite while the tree surgeons worked.

A broken water line also meant Thames Water had to attend to make sure the site was safe.

Mr Edwards, who has worked for the company for 24 years, said: “The logistics involved and the number of different parties involved meant this was certainly the most complex operation I have ever been involved in.

“The camaraderie between everyone was great to see, it was great teamwork.”

The diversion meant drivers had to travel miles either side to find alternative routes, while the 246 bus to Westerham terminated at Biggin Hill for the duration of the closure.
